The LADS (Laser Airborne Depth Sounder) project was a major DSTO achievement in its time. The competing technology was/is sonar, another area many DSTO alumni worked in.

A recent article in IEEE Spectrum on a new underwater imaging system that combines both technologies makes an interesting read, especially for folk who worked in either domain.
